Marimekko is a classic brand whose clothes and accessories delight many even when pre-owned – in fact, it is Emmy’s best-selling clothing brand. The prints are characterized by clear, memorable patterns and colors as well as gorgeous Finnish design. All fabrics are printed in Herttoniemi, Helsinki.

The iconic brand’s high-quality products are designed to stay beautiful for a long time and to stand the test of time. Over the years, the patterns have been spotted on Jacqueline Kennedy, in the Sex and the City series, in Vogue magazines, on Manolo Blahnik and Converse shoes, and even on Finnair airplanes. Patterns designed decades ago still look fresh and timeless, and older classic patterns are even hunted down at flea markets. We’ve listed some of Marimekko’s popular patterns found in Emmy’s selection, along with the stories behind them.

Tasaraita and Piccolo

Stripe patterns have always been associated with Marimekko. Piccolo is a classic pattern by Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi from 1953, consisting of hand-painted lines. The Piccolo pattern is known from the Jokapoika shirts, which have been produced over the years in many different colors. It’s worth trying to get your hands on the rarer colors secondhand.

Another popular stripe pattern is the Tasaraita pattern, which symbolizes equality. Annika Rimala designed the striped jersey shirt especially to go with jeans, suiting everyone – regardless of gender, size, or age. This year, Tasaraita is already celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Siirtolapuutarha and Räsymatto

The Siirtolapuutarha and Räsymatto patterns are super popular prints designed by Maija Louekari in the late 2000s. They are inspired by cottage life in an urban setting. Siirtolapuutarha’s pattern hides a journey from the cityscape to the flower meadows and vegetable patches of an allotment garden. Räsymatto, true to its name, depicts a rag rug waiting on the floor of an allotment garden cottage.

Unikko and Ruutu-Unikko

Perhaps the most beloved of Marimekko’s patterns is Maija Isola’s Unikko, designed in 1964. It is also an internationally popular and sought-after print. Marimekko’s founder Armi Ratia once vowed that the company would never produce floral patterns – but as a protest, Isola created the wonderful Unikko. The floral splendor was revived in the 2000s when the pattern was also updated into a checkered version. In addition to Unikko, Maija Isola is also behind the Lokki and Kaivo patterns.
