This week we are celebrating International Recycling Day. So, it might be a good time to think about why decluttering your wardrobe isn’t easy. As a project, it usually ends up last on the list, and it’s hard to find time for it amidst a busy life and daily routines. Yet, we subconsciously stress every time we choose an outfit for the day, thinking: “Oh no, I haven’t worn that piece of clothing in ages.”
For many of us, tidying up the wardrobe is a personal goal. It’s also a space that needs recycling and updating from time to time. In our minds, the task often grows too big. However, thoughts like “I have to get it all done at once!” or “I need a whole day to do it” are just unnecessary mental races that delay getting started.
We get much better results, both for the organization of our clothes and our minds, when we take the renewal one step at a time and at a pace that suits us!
The word “cleaning” itself isn’t necessarily inviting when it comes to updating your wardrobe. That’s why I personally like to use synonyms that bring a nice feeling to the task, like wardrobe renewal/update/konmari. Next, I’ll share some other motivating facts that have given both me and many other Emmy users a great feeling while updating!
- Storing clothes doesn’t increase their value. Why keep clothes in storage unnecessarily when you could get more money for them? Did you know that usually only 30% of the contents of a wardrobe are actually used? Pretty wild!
- Everyday life becomes much clearer when your closet is organized and there are no longer clothes you don’t wear. That feeling when you know, even before looking in your wardrobe: “Yes! There are only clothes here that I actually wear!”
- You are responsible and a pioneer in the circular economy when you recycle your clothes properly. And how easy it is! You can list your clothes for sale from your own sofa using an online form, even order a home pickup for them, and after that, you don’t have to worry about a thing. At least when selling with Emmy.
Especially when it comes to letting go of branded clothes, it’s not easy, as they are often bought for emotional reasons. How do you let go of that lovely Gucci dress bought in Milan, which once took up half your holiday budget and brings back wonderful memories, but now feels uncomfortably tight?
We should remember that our style, size, and the occasions we dress for can change in life. This means the contents of our wardrobe need to change too. Often, though, we leave the clothes of our former selves waiting for another chance at the back of the closet. If these clothes had feelings, they’d probably cry from loneliness, never getting to be seen. When I think about my own feelings after letting go of an important branded item during a declutter, I can’t even remember why it was so hard, let alone what the item was! Now I only remember how nice it was to get some money and how great it felt that the item got a better life.
Let’s do some good together and start tidying up our wardrobes now, and give ourselves the freedom from unused clothes!
